Out here

I've been putting myself out here in the blog world for over six months now. I've revealed fairly intimate details of my emotional and psychological life, and tried to be as honest as possible about the confusion, sadness, frustration, hopelessness and occasional elation I feel in the course of doing this work.

Yesterday I encountered, for the first time in those six months, really hostile comments. The commenter made some valid criticisms (and I actually would welcome more critical comment here) but his/her tone was incredibly hostile and included an indirect reference to violence.

I welcome the criticism but I don't welcome the hostility.

I find myself reflecting on the risk I might be taking by putting myself up here. You may have noticed that I have removed my photo. I was concerned about attracting hostile attention when I started this blog, but didn't get any until now, six months later. Well, this is one small blip on the otherwise entirely benevolent and positively inspiring connections I've made here.

For now I'm not taking the threatening tone too seriously. If the commentor is angry, then I can understand that – there is so much to be angry about in this place. If there are aspects of how I live my life that seem hypocritical or inconsistent, well I wouldn't have too much argument with that either. The hostility is not acceptable but at the same time I feel like I want to be open to criticism and challenge.

I’m just testing to see if I can leave a comment, since others have said they could not.

Hey! I was scrolling down your blog & was sad to see this. But I read on some othr blog that it’s possible to block the ISP of anyone from the comments section… Perhaps if you look it up & it’s bothering you, you could do it?
