What the world needs from you

The planet doesn’t need more ‘successful’ people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every shape and form. It needs people who will live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these needs have little to do with success as our culture has defined it.

– David Orr in Earth in Mind

Forget success.

Make it your mission to be brave.

Forget your job title.

Listen for your callings.

Forget wealth.

Learn to live well in your place.

Forget marketing.

Find and tell the stories that will heal you.

Forget popularity.

Let yourself love foolishly.

This is what the world needs from you.

March 2014 Update — Over the next several weeks I’ll be looking back at a number of courage-themed blog posts (like this one) from my archives in preparation for the next round of 30 Days of Courage.

I want you to know how important your voice and your participation is for the future of our planet — and to I want you to have the courage you need to tell your story and play your part. In fact, that’s why I created 30 Days of Courage — a month-long program from women (and men) who have an inkling of the work they need to do in the world, and who need some space, guidance and encouragement to get clear and brave enough to do it.

The next round of 30 Days of Courage will begin on 24 March — and registration is now open!

Mmmm…. so good to remember! Mother Teresa said “I am not called to be successful. I am called to be faithful.” Thank you for being a sensible and centering voice in the wilderness.
